Blindly force editing data can compromise quality, and therefore no forcing is done at time of data entry. The initial punched data files will contain exactly what the puncher has seen entered on the questionnaire. If you then require the data to be cleaned, a separate cleaning programme is written, and all punched data is run through this.
This programme will either:


	•	produce an edit report, containing a list and details of all edit failures, or
	•	operate interactively, so that all edit failures are corrected on screen by an operator as the programme is running.

Either way, almost all editing will involve reviewing the completed questionnaires before any editing decisions are taken.
